What can we say?
I don't think that either of us ever dreamed that our new venture would have sparked the imaginations of so many people. We are truly humbled by the support and response we have received for our blog and can only thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for the superb work you have shared with us this week!
We would indeed be blessed if you all continue to support us in this wonderful way.
So a huge THANK YOU to you all!
Now on to this week's challenge. If you bit the bullet to try last week's challenge, you're going to have to start chewing on it for this week's.
The challenge is a ONE LAYER CARD with the theme of a
FLOWER or a TREE.
Our definition of a OLC (One Layer Card) is on our sidebar and we would ask you to stick to these guidelines please.
Fonts used: Day Dream and Fabulous 50s
I frequently use the computer for my sentiments and try to make them more attractive.
Because I'm nit pickingly fussy had this not been a one layer challenge
id have cut the F so the stem went behind it!
So I thought I would show you a little tutorial for the different effects you can create.
This works especially well [I think] for the One Layer Cards.
Ok so you print your word as normal,
mine was Flowers [although I left a space where the letter 'L' should be for my flower].
mine was Flowers [although I left a space where the letter 'L' should be for my flower].
Then highlight to the word, as you would to change the size, colour or font.
Go to the toolbar at the top of the page and click on the arrow to open the Font box
Go to the toolbar at the top of the page and click on the arrow to open the Font box
*I can't give you a screen shot as there are a few 'Microsoft Word' variations, but, I'm sure you will follow what I mean, it's very easy!
In the Font box you will see Effects
Check that box [Tick]
You will then see that the word you typed will now be outlined.
You can then use a Quickie Glue pen and Deco Art glitter...Voila!!
I have shown a variation of a coloured outline, for a softer effect.
Please click the small pics for larger images
So that's my little tutorial for you.
I hope you found it interesting...
albeit not rocket science LOL.
More on font styling in the coming weeks...
And now it's my turn!
Chrissie
My card uses a sponged background, made by die-cutting a sheet of paper to reveal a square hole and attaching it to the front of the card with lo-tack tape. (I used sticky tape that I tapped onto my sweater a few times to reduce the adhesive strength). Using this as a mask I sponged the card with several colours of ink using sponge daubers. (SU Sahara Sand + Pumice Stone & Frayed Burlap Distress Inks)
This tree from Stampin' Up refused to be placed anywhere but in the centre of the square... I tried it overlapping the side of the square but its majesty refused to be placed anywhere but centrally!
The Hero Arts sentiment was aligned using my Lego stamp positioner (see last week's tip). Both of these were stamped in Walnut Stain DI .
The image box is positioned off centre and the sentiment partly aligned with the side of the square.

At this point I would like to thank those of you who have taken the time to visit the blogs of fellow participants. Everyone loves to receive a comment and as there are only two of us it would be great if we could become part of a community where we take an interest in each other's work and each receive a few more comments. A big thank you to Deborah Frings here, who has visited so many of you. I do hope you'll pay her a return visit!
There will be monthly prizes awarded to someone from among the contestants who have contributed to each challenge in that month. Prize details will be shown later.
Love your challenge - I did a card for last week but couldn't show cause I forgot to post - hopefully will add two this week.
ReplyDeleteI find 'simple' hard so am hoping to learn loads - your designs are superb.

ReplyDeleteCan't wait to play again this week - trees, mmmmm!
Just want to say how 'different' your challenge blog is! I am already a follower due to the fact I struggle with white space and feel this blog will enable me to be able to grasp it. I have not entered the challenge yet, but will do........ Love the way you add tips and tecniques to help us all. I am sure your challenge blog will go from strenth to strength and am looking forward to future challenges and eventually being confident to 'enjoy white space' and enter! Sue x

ReplyDeleteCongrats to you both - you've defo touched a nerve with your new venture! I seem to remember someone saying it would be a small grouped challenge blog - Got that one wrong Chrissie - at this rate it's going to be BIG! Lovely DT cards, well done, ikki
ReplyDeleteOnly just found your blog and thought I would have a go. Love all the cards, they are so different and refreshing!
ReplyDeleteOOOOh I'm SOooo excited - I have a specific card already in my head that I've been putting off for months - time to get it into reality!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your efforts here - this really fills a need for me, and obviously many others, too. I appreciate the tips, and want to thank Chrissie once again for letting me know about my blog comments being inactivated. I think it's fixed, now. :0
I'm in....again!

Just made a card, and the comment was it says 'A' flower, but I seen several have but more than one flower, should I assume you mean one? I was always told at school to read the question twice.. hehe
ReplyDeleteI would say as long as there is at least one flower then that would be OK! More is probably a bonus!
ReplyDeleteChrissie
What a great response and entries. I love the idea of trying something against my crafting grain. I'm off to look at some of the great entires in this weeks challenge now.

ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog Chrissie and for pointing out my mistake in calling my card OLW when it should have said OLC!!
ReplyDeleteKathyk
Mandi & Chrissie - thank you so much for a fantastic tutorial - it was brilliant and you are certainly making me look twice at my card making. I have actually made two cards for this challenge but Mr Linky wouldn't let me post my two images so I've just left one - they are both in the same post on my blog. Great DT cards.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on a brilliant first week response. I'm sure this challenge blog will grow and grow. I know it's right up my street!
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work!
Hiya,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all congratulations on such a wonderful challenge launch....

Well done for such a fab blog.Where have you been all my craftiing life? Don't normally like to enter some challenges as they are too fussy for me, but this challenge is right up my street. You have made a lot of people happy and by the looks of it people are now looking at their craft stuff differently to get that clean and simple look.Keep it up and thanks.....
ReplyDeleteLove the concept of your challenge! Am now a follower and can't wait for the next challenge!

Thank you again, am sure your site is going to be a HUGE success:-)
ReplyDeleteBea, no 82, you have linked to a close-up rather than to your blog posting, if you could do a new link that would be great... we'd be able to visit you then!

ReplyDeleteHi again - link now active as I had previouxly put the wrong url in - sorry
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled across this blog (linked from your other blog) and am inspired to try white space, I have tried it in my scrapbooking but to be honest I am a 'more is more' kind of girl but your blog has given me the push I needed to try something different,, the samples here all look so serene and elegant - thankyou for sharing all the tips and tricks, I will be back lol xxx
ReplyDeleteWonderful challenge blog, enjoyed it very much last week so I'm back to see what all the others did. And they did amazing cards! less is more - that's it.
ReplyDeleteBianca
Thanks to everyone for stopping by my blog. It's encouraged me to make another OLC slightly different to my first entry.
ReplyDeleteChrissie/Mandi - if you're not allowed to enter more than one card I'd rather submit my entry marked (2) and you can delete my first one. Thanks
Hugs, Sandra x
lots of lovely cards.
ReplyDeleteI'm not brave enough to go down to just one layer......so my card is inspired by your challenge, but I have not entered it.
Fantastic sample cards!! thanks for the tutorials. Struggled at first to make a "budget" OLC...have gone for quirky rather than classy!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing entries so far, have really enjoyed looking at them.

Hi again Chrissie ..should have said in me post the image was stamped with Versafine & used clear E/pwd..it has glossy finish still think it needs more..the Rose one is pretty but feel its digi isnt as vibrant outline..if you know what I mean..LOL
ReplyDeletethanks for your lovely comms.
smiles Christine xx
Thank you both so much for this blog, it has been very enlightening and encouraging that I do not need to have layers and layers on cards, which is something I have struggled with, so I suppose this style is meant for me, although I do feel such a cheat that it is so quick. I will have to do other types though, as I get bored with the same style. Thanks again and for your comments.
ReplyDeleteOh! yes Chrissie the water on my second entry does look tipsy I hadn't even noticed that, even when I glossed it, that is so funny.
I love the idea of this blog and also your tips and techniques as well as seeing the lovely entries.
ReplyDeleteKath x
You have really captured the imagination of the crafting community and you must feel elated by the well-deserved success of this new site! Thank you both.
ReplyDeleteThanks ladies for such a great site. Saturday is my crafting day so was waiting for last weeks challenge to go up so I could get creating!!!!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this weeks x x
Great challenge girls and thanks for taking the time to visit and comment on both my entries. I am so glad there is someone out there who is willing to be constructive and not just say how lovely when something is so obviously wrong. My first entry wasn't right and thank goodness I was able to reduce the size and remove the HUGE word, it is now a C6 size and looks so much better.
ReplyDeleteJenny x
What an inspiring blog this is! What lovely cards! And what a pants photo of my card!! My photo-fu is not very good!
ReplyDeleteluv, Mags x
Well this time I am sure my card suits this challenge thank you for the venue your cards are inspirational
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge, thanks! To stay true to one layer and still be able to have that flower stem go "behind" the lettering, you might want to make friends with masking fluid (try an artist supply place or I believe Maya Road make one now so maybe a LSS). You just paint a tiny bit over the section of you letter you want to stay at the front and let it dry. Stamp your image and then gently rub the mask film away - voila! It lets you mask very fiddly detail that wouldn't really be oossible with cut out Post It notes.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say thanks for ShowCASing my card from last wekk and how much I am enjoying taking part in this challenge..It's just fab!!
ReplyDeletekerry x
Have just come across your blog from a link on Jo Bee's blog and must say I love the look of your challanges! Will try to play along :)
ReplyDeleteThis is my first ever blog challenge, I just had to join in as CAS is a style I love but I tend to be a 'More is More' girl! It has taken me a week to work out how to upload and link, hope I got it right!
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant idea for a card challenge. this is my first challenge and I think I'm going to enjoy it. X
ReplyDeleteI love these challenges as I am a less is more type of crafter, embellishments scare me and I always struggle with them. Thank you to everyone who has left a comment on my blog. I have tried to visit as many as I can and leave a comment, sorry if I have missed anyone out all of your cards are fab xx
ReplyDeleteThank you ladies for a great new challenge. Sorry I missed last week but I'll try to join in in the future.
ReplyDeleteBeryl xx
Another great challenge. I'm really enjoying taking part. Sue.x
ReplyDeleteHi :)
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say Congrats and thank you to you Chrissi and Mandi for having such a great idea and doing it so well- I love the feel of this challenge!! :)
And I've said this in my post but... thank you to all the lovely people who visited my blog after my entry last week and especially to those who left comments- it means a lot!! :) My health often means I can't visit as many blogs as I'd like or leave many comments myself but I've loved seeing all the ones I did manage to make it to- so much inspiration so thank you!! :)
Look forward to more to come, hugs, Rachel x
Hi Mandi, sorry, didn't take enough notice. I've withdrawn my card from the challenge.
ReplyDeleteSally x
I thank you for talking about using the computer for your sentiments. I have wondered if anyone else ever did that. I really enjoy looking at all the clean and simple cards.
ReplyDeleteI am totally loving the inspiration from you both and I thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteBig congrats on the success so far and I'm sure it will continue and grow even more.
Have a wonderful day.
Debs xx
I have a question about card size. Are most of the cards 8.5 x 11 stock folded in half or is the 8.5 x 11 paper cut in half and then folded in half?
ReplyDeleteI think people use whatever size card is suitable for the composition of the card they wish to create.
ReplyDeleteI use a variety of card shapes and sizes, I never buy card blanks, but cut A4 card into whatever size I feel best suits the project in hand, sometimes making bespoke envelopes to fit.
if you wish to know any specific card sizes, do please ask.
Chrissie
Hi Chrissy and Mandi,
ReplyDeleteLove your blog Just found it earlier tonight and will certainly be back every day.
